Ran my first ever 5K today. It started out more as a social event, but then I got bored/competitive and picked up my pace a little bit. Even so, I certainly didn't set any land speed records. If I had to guess, I'd say my first mile was at least 10 minutes!! After that, I think I was running around 7 minute miles.

So how many 13-year old girls finished ahead of you in this race?
The last time I ran a 5K was like 4 years ago. I was about 1/2 mile from the finish; I come around a turn and see this pack of junior high school girls up ahead of me. There was NO WAY I was finishing behind them.
I'm looking forward to the Pike tourney - enough with all this lifting and crap, let's play.
I actually finished in the lead pack of non-college track team runners and other distance folks, so I was relatively happy in that I didn't totally embarrass myself.
One thing about the race, the hills were nasty. First mile, all uphill. Second mile, down 1/2 mile up 1/2 mile. Last mile, steep downhill with slight incline at the end.
At the beginning of the race, a bunch of folks took off and dusted the rest of us. Mary Ellen said something like, "This is just like that investment commercial with the runners on the beach." I replied, "You mean the one where the track team gets off to an early lead and builds on it throughout the race finishing 10 minutes ahead of everyone else?"
